Bugs Henderson & The Shuffle Kings - Blue Music (2008)

Texas blues/rock guitar legend Bugs Henderson, checks in with a brand-new studio album filled with all original material titled BLUE MUSIC. Bugs Henderson’s brand-new studio album is the most personal and by far the blue-est yet from the Texas superstar guitarist. BLUE MUSIC, his second release for No Guru Records features Bugs and his Shuffle Kings on 14 new, hard hitting tracks that give a truthful insight into the forty plus year career of this blues/rock icon. There’s a tribute to the late Tulsa, Oklahoma disc jockey John Henry, a song about the death of his father during World War Two, plenty of the hard rockin’ Henderson style guitar that he’s famous for, some humorous items and one particular track about the drug dealers that nearly ruined his son’s lives. That track, titled “I Want The Mother****** forced us to put the first Parental Advisory warning we’ve ever had on a No Guru release rather than ask Bugs to change the lyric. If you are easily offended by truthful language you may want to avoid this recording.

Bugs Henderson & The Shuffle Kings - Stormy Love (2004)

The cast has been extended for Stormy Love. Besides some of the usual suspects, HendersonHenderson's with Nitzinger. The extension of the band has made for an enriched sound different from the usual trio line-up. You get to hear the timeless sound of a Hammond B-3, even some acoustic guitars and harmony vocals have found a place in the mix on this one. This CD is a must listen. Bugs puts a new twist on a couple of my favorite Bugs tunes. One strong song after another. Great job. What a talent. The other players are all top notch too, especially Keith Jones on bass. You won't go wrong with this CD. You have to see him live. Awesome show. I highly recommend this CD. was able to welcome a dear old friend again, drummer Linda Waring a former bandmate of

This is a nice live set from Bugs and would be a good addition to any true fan collection. The bonus CD is for the serious fan as it does little to add to the overall quality of this set (just more quantity).

Bugs Henderson - Heartbroke Again (2000)

Nown as Texas Eagles-not the best recording quality, but hearable and like most by Bugs:Finest shuffle and great licks!!Sugar for Daddy!! I've listened to Bugs since his days with Mouse & the Traps, Nitzinger and Freddie King - that's roughly 30 years. He never fails to put on a good show and always embodies that killer tone he is known for. While this recording does not break any barriers from a sound quality perspective, it is a historic recording nonetheless, as it is the only known recording of this 4 piece band which featured both Jimmy Wallace and Mike Gage (on guitar and drums respectively), as well as longtime stalwart Bobby Chitwood on bass. A good performance with the two guitarists trading licks and making some noise - highly recommended for Bugs collectors.

Bugs Henderson - The Unreleased '82 Sessions (1999)

Had this been released in 1982, it would have been the third album for the Bugs Henderson Group. It was not released at that time, however, due to differing thoughts on its style. In 1998 the tapes were resurrected and the vocals were re-cut. Like quite a few of Henderson's releases, Backbop mixes brilliant moments of guitar mastery with complete let-downs. Only serious guitar freaks and die-hard Bugs fans will find this one worth the price of admission. Don't expect much in the way of blues either. Most of Backbop is good old-fashioned rock & roll -- except it's not all that good. The strongest cuts are "Help Me," which blends sounds as diverse as '70s rock and Chet Atkins; "Love Junkie," which comes the closest to blues with some nice jazzy riffs that are lessened only by too much repetition; and "Thief of the Night," which sees Henderson at his fiercest, rocking out with all the speed and bends his fans cherish. His customary "Audio Liner Notes," his personal visit with the listener, features some very nice acoustic picking and strumming under his voice as he details the origins of the album's tunes. For the most part, this is hard '70s rock & roll, reflecting the crazy life and times of the band during that period. Bugs describes it best: "high intensity, up-tempo, get it on and kick it stuff." [A Danish verison of the CD was issued in 2000.]

Bugs Henderson - Have Blues... Must Rock (1998)

"I'm fascinated by the things people say -- they try to tell me what I should play. Critics, pickers, radio too - they say I play too hard, I oughta play more blue. I know my music, and I know my name. Don't cut no hit records, don't play no T.V. game. My blues got rocked and my rock got blue. If you don't dig it, well find something else to do." These lyrics from the title track pretty much sum it up. If you're just looking for blues, this is not the Bugs Henderson CD you want. If you just like to listen to him rock out, this isn't the one either. Have Blues ... Must Rock has some hard rock ("No One Owns the Blues," "Chain Me") and some blues ("My Baby," "Thirteen Ways"), but it also contains a dark ballad ("Lovin' Yourself), some country (Billy Joe Shaver's "Tramp on Your Street") and other miscellaneous styles. There's a version of Merle Haggard's "I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink" and a funky, rocking version of Freddie King's "Hide Away." Henderson has earned the right to play that one any way he wants, since he probably played it hundreds of times as a member of King's band in the '70s. "Uncle John" is a touching, slower song featuring some very nice guitar and interesting chords. It is one of the strongest tunes on the album. Most of the originals, however, are generally weak and most of the lyrics sound very contrived.

Bugs Henderson & The Shuffle Kings - Four Tens Strike Again (1996)

Bugs has played with Freddie King, Nitzinger and many others too numerous to mention. If you like Texas Blues Rock, you owe it to yourself to check this disc out. Bugs covers Dylan with "Highway 61", offers a very cool interpretation of Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love", and serves up "Crippled Gnat Bounce" from his Nitzinger days. This recording features the great Andy Timmons on two tracks and the sure fire Hammond B-3 expertise of Tommy Young, both players hailing from the Dallas tradition of musical excellence. Highly recommended !

Bugs Henderson - That's The Truth (1995)

Bugs Henderson splashes a warning on the inside sleeve for anyone who might not know the drill: "This is not elevator music. Crank it up!" There are no overdubs, no re-takes, and no fancy tricks on this live recording, captured on five consecutive nights in November 1994 in various clubs in Colorado. If you've never seen Henderson live, this is as close as one will likely come to hearing what he is capable of when he begins playing his trademark red Paul Reed Smith guitar. Accompanied only by his son Buddy Henderson on drums and Keith Jones on bass, the artist gives you fast instrumentals, slow blues, heavy rock, slow rock, boogies, and everything in between. There's amplifier hum and feedback, whistling fans, and songs more than ten minutes long. One of just two covers, "Johnny B. Goode" is unlike any version heard before. It starts out with a bass solo, and then Henderson comes in with flying guitar effects. Three minutes pass before he even begins to sing. On "You Can't Sit Down," Henderson goes all out, demonstrating why he is the guitar hero he has become to followers. The center section of the song, a full three minutes, is all Henderson; a true guitar solo -- he goes it alone, no bass or drums. He throws in more heroics and licks than you can shake a whammy bar at. The Knack's "My Sharona," the Beatles' "I Feel Fine," Led Zeppelin's "Cashmere," and "Peter Gunn" all figure into the equation. In his customary audio liner notes, Henderson admits that mistakes were recorded (after one of them he even steps to the mic and says, "Sorry"), but insists that after listening to over 15 hours of tapes, he chose the songs that reflect the feeling, fire, and passion of everyone's playing instead of those on which his own playing comes as close to perfect as possible.

Bugs Henderson - Daredevils Of The Red Guitar (1994)

This is the stuff guitar heroes are made of. Henderson doles out everything from straight-up rock & roll to slow, nasty blues and twangy country on this album. The quality and clarity of the sound on this recording serve to enhance and complement Henderson's in-you-face guitar style too. The opening track "Hit the Bricks" is fairly weak, and there are a few others that don't necessarily light any fires (the title track and "Love Somebody"), but the rest of the CD smokes. The seven instrumentals include Henderson's favorite Link Wray song "Rawhide," and a twangy, two-part version of Duane Eddy's "Rebel Rouser." The Ventures medley is a true delight (he breaks out the whammy bar a bit). "Brandon's Song" features some double-lead guitar and sounds like something you might hear from Clapton. "Jitterbugs Part 2" is some of the fastest swing you'll ever hear. It includes a great bass solo and a dead stop part of the way through, after which Henderson says in his great Texas drawl, "Is it just me, or is this too damn slow?." You can probably guess what happens next. Willie Nelson (vocals on "These Eyes") and Tom Morrell (nice steel guitar on "Judi Likes the Blues") are among the guest artists.

Bugs Henderson - Years In The Jungle (1993)

For years Bugs Henderson has been thrilling crowds in Texas and the rest of the country with his brand of "American Music," a blend of blues influenced by rock, country, and a little jazz. Perhaps this is why the music merchants have such fits trying to place Bugs in a niche where he just will never fit. "Years in the Jungle" is another in the series of ass kickin' albums that began with "At Last" back in the late 70's and has its most recent incarnation in "Henderson and Jones." The album begins with "Anthem for the Blues," which is exactly what it is, an excellent example of the Henderson blues style. This album also features the ballad, "Lost in Austin," an observance of times past and present for this Texas troubador. This is a must hear song, featured in most concert appearances at the crowd's request. Henderson also does some excellent covers of "Sweet Marie" and "Summertime Blues" that are worth hearing. "Honey Mama" and "Blues in Reverse" feature that axe style that is known to blues fans as uniquely Henderson. "Video S.O.B." is Bugs' commentary on the modern music scene. The album closes with "Cowboy", an almost spiritual song of lament for a bygone era.

Poor David's Pub...the local joint. Bugs has done it again. A live recording of the Henderson & Jones Album at Poor David's Pub which captures the essence of the artist himself, and his ability to consummately entertain an audience 'en vivo' as they say n Espanol. To paraphrase Bugs, "it's my best live recording ever." In August of 1992 Bugs recorded first at Poor David's Pub an album "Gitarbazndrumz". PDP has been linked to Bugs since 1983 when first duo'ed with Ray Wylie Hubbard. Since then he has been a regular, because "he's so damn good." Every August PD'S has a anniversary concert. This August will be the 24th anniversary of the Shuffle Kings in one form or another. Bugs Henderson biography

Bugs Henderson was born in Palm Springs, California in 1943 and grew up in Tyler, Texas. Bugs had a burning desire to pick up the 6 string at an early age. At the age of 6 he discovered his first love.

Beginning in the early 1960's he began working in a record store in Tyler. As a teen he would sneak out of the house against his fathers wishes just to catch live gigs in the local joints. Beginning his own band, the Sensors, at age 16 he soon joined his friend, Ronnie Weiss, in a band called Mouse and the Traps. Mouse and the traps charted its first song, "Public Execution" in 1966. This is where he earned his name "Bugs" over shadowing his real name Buddy.

By the end of the decade, Bugs had made the transition from fan to musician. As a house guitarist at the Robin Hood Studios, he played demo sessions behind numerous performers from country to rock.

Bugs' signature sound was beginning to define itself during the 1970s with the blues. Quoting Bugs, "Blues was all that mattered to me; no other music was worth a damn." During this time, Bugs moved from Tyler to Dallas in order to join the scene of a bar called The Cellar. "It's really hard to explain that place," Henderson remembers. "It was this big, black room. It had a red light that came on when the cops were coming in and another light for fights. The waitresses wore just bras and panties, but they ran three or four bands in a night and everybody played original music. We usually didn't leave until four in the morning, and there was no other place like it around. It was the best thing that happened to my music. I learned a lot."

Henderson went from small clubs to playing on stage opening for artists such as the Allman Brothers, B.B King, and Leon Russell. Henderson described it as "a big change."

Bugs and his love for blues got tired of the wide-open riff-oriented rock, and friend Freddie King began pushing for Henderson to start his own band. Bugs the assembled his first record "At Last" released on succession of 14 albums spanning over four decades.

Success and it's spoils began wreaking havoc on Bugs' life in the late 1970s. Bugs took time to take a good hard look at where his life was and where it was going. "Most of the people I ran with are dead, in jail, or just look terrible. With God's help and good friends, I came out of it, "Henderson says. Bugs Henderson lives in East Texas with his wife Patty and daughter Zoey. "The order of importance in his life is simple: Family, Music, Career. Bugs explains, "I couldn't have the life I have now and be a major star. Couldn't go to my kids' ball games. I wouldn't give up that for anything."

His mixture of searing blues, jazz ability, swing, funk, and just about everything else that can be played on six strings; Bugs has the ability to give his audience a sense of true musical art, applying enormous control over his tone and coloration.

Bugs has played with guitar icons such as B.B. King, Freddie King, Eric Clapton, Ted Nugent, Roy Buchanan, and James Burton. To this day, Bugs' guitar hangs in Hard Rock Cafe' in Dallas along side instruments donated by Lee Ritenouer and Chet Atkins.

"I tell people all the time that I know you're supposed to stop and smell the roses as you go though life, but in my case I stopped and moved into the garden."

Danny Bryant's Redeyeband - Black And White (2008)

After four self produced albums and numerous exciting performances across Europe leading to the eponymous Live album that took the European blues community by a storm in 2007, Danny Bryant and his RedEyeBand now return to the forefront of rocking blues with their sixth CD named by Danny's new acoustic song Black and White. Recorded at the fabulously analogue Grange Studios UK these 10 self penned songs mark a major highlight in Danny's 10 year career. As ever his voice is packed with heartfelt soul and many songs have been dedicated to and written for the love of his life. Danny Bryant together with RedEyeBand rhythm section Ken Bryant and Trevor Barr, magnificently supervised by blues recording legend Dave Williams, has come up with what in retrospect may well be one of his career albums.

Danny Bryant always gives his absolute ALL on stage and this CD captures the energy beautifully. Throughout the experience, Danny reigns supreme. Danny Bryant's RedEyeBand - Days Like This (2005)

“Days Like This” is Danny Bryant’s fourth CD and may be his best yet. In my reviews of his previous three CDs, I always mentioned his uncanny similarity to Walter Trout, not surprising since Trout is his mentor and good friend. This time around, Trout appears with Bryant on one of the songs and it is the listener’s good fortune to realize that it is often difficult to determine which of the two is playing or singing at any given time. The song itself is the title track and, clocking in at over eight minutes, is slow blues nirvana.

Danny Bryant's Redeye Band - Covering Their Tracks (2004)

This is the third RedEyeBand CD from the Blues Matters Record arm of the popular magazine. However it is the first by this excellent band that includes covers. Of the ten tracks there are six covers and four original material tracks. The first track is a musical reply to critics who say Danny is not old or experienced enough to play blues and he's a Hertfordshire lad and not a pukka blues player from the Mississippi Delta or wherever .The lyrics are a brilliant retort to these stupid critics with their heads stuck firmly up their own bottoms. The 12 bar progression, with its fills and growling vocals are pure blues. The track has some super guitar as we have now come to expect from one of Great Britain 's favourite blues players. The title quite clearly states “This is The Blues”. Quite so! First of the covers is a “Hendrix Jam” taken from the extended version of Voodoo Chile (not Slight Return). It's something the band started jamming along to in the studio and decided to keep. It's a lot of Hendrix but it's a lot of Danny too. Danny has his own style and it stands out even over the top of Jimi the Maestro's music. With plenty of wah wah and a solid drum and bass foundation, Danny's gruff vocals and superb guitar licks, the song sounds bluesier than Jimi ever played it, and that certainly is not to any detriment. One of Danny's most respected players is Eric Clapton, and one of his favourite songs is “Old Love” from “slow hand's” Journeyman album. This version is far more dramatic and emotional than the original both vocally and certainly the solo which is fabulous. The bends are pitch perfect and the tone superb, played over a well metered rhythm section of Andy Burt and Ken Bryant. An Elmore James inspired, slide dominated number entitled “Blues Before Sunrise” makes you realise just how versatile Danny is on guitar. It's a brilliant showcase and the slide playing is as good as you'll get. I like George Thorogood when it comes to slide playing but this track matches anything I've ever heard by a slide player. Many can play slide guitar, but not many can make it sound as good as this. Excellent vocals too on this traditional sounding 12 bar blues. Declaring his love for his fiancé Kirby, comes the track “Lean on Me”, an overdubbed jangly chord theme with lead fills over the top and Danny's meaningful lyrics. The solo is another beauty, with nice tone and fluent delivery. Eddie Boyd's “Five Long Years” has been covered by many over the years and I would think from Buddy Guy to Ian Parker, I've never heard a bad version. I still haven't, Danny's version is excellent too with a wonderful intro. He sings it so well and the composition suits Danny's vocal style to perfection. Ken and Andy are there with him, perfect rhythm backing under Danny's ultra bluesy guitar. It's a great track this one, utterly superb. Popa Chubby might not be a household name but the fact is, he's a brilliant artist. Danny subscribes to this train of thought and has had the presence of mind to record the wonderful composition “Nobody Loves Me Like I Love Myself”. The song by Popa C is unbelievably good but Danny's version is just out of this world. Well sang and played so brilliantly, you would have thought Danny had written the song himself. This song and particularly the guitar progression is outstanding. Truly outstanding. Bob Dylan's “Girl from the North Country ” has been played for years to great effect by Walter Trout. Danny admits to using Walter's excellent arrangement of the great songwriter Bob Dylan's composition. The result is well worth the effort, very similar to Walter's playing but with Danny's signature all over it. With mellow vocals and great guitar work including volume swells as Walter would have done, it's a wonderful inclusion to this album. In an attempt by Danny to write an original composition in the style of his mentor Walter Trout, I think Danny gets pretty close with “Time (To Say Goodbye)” .It's a good song and sits well with the classic covers on this CD. To close the album, another Danny Bryant original instrumental plays us out. This number, entitled “Memories”, is dedicated to his late Grandmother and is a very nicely played piece of music, typifying Danny's ultra proficient guitar playing accompanied as always by Ken and Andy's steady rhythm playing. This is a very nice CD album of varied content and one I am pleased to have as part of my record collection. If you want blues or sentimental songs and a wonderful instrumental thrown in, you will not go wrong with this CD.

Danny Bryant's RedEyeBand - Shadows Passed (2003)

“Shadows Passed” is Bryant’s follow-up CD to “Watching You” and while the comparisons to Trout are still evident, it is clear that Bryant is now becoming his own man. Every song on “Shadows Passed” is an original Bryant composition and the variety of styles is impressive. The common bond among all songs is the excellence of Bryant’s guitar playing and vocals. All of the superlatives that you could apply in describing his playing are appropriate: he plays with emotion, intensity, tone, and fluidity. His vocals are the perfect foil to his playing in that he has a powerful, bluesy, gravely voice that belies his age. The band itself is a power-trio, occasionally augmented with keyboards. Ken Bryant, Danny’s father, plays bass and Andy Burt plays drums. They are a tight rhythm section that provides a superb foundation for Danny’s playing. The CD begins with the title song which contains a slow, tough guitar and piano intro that soon turns into a display of Bryant’s vocal talent interspersed with guitar fills and concludes with a powerful guitar solo. “Play to Win” is a straight-ahead up-tempo blues that contains a superb wah-wah solo. “Sleep Alone” is a rather tender song with a mellow piano intro and showcases Bryant’s vocals. All tenderness falls by the wayside with “Movin’ on Back to You” which is a tough, aggressive medium-tempo, churning track that is perhaps the most “Trout-like” song on the CD. As is the case throughout the CD, the guitar solo is wonderful. “For the Love of Angels” may slow the pace but not the intensity and includes one of the most burning solos on the CD. “One Look” is a slow, acoustic pop-oriented track with heartfelt vocals. “Going Back Home” begins with a rather tinny sounding guitar and purposely poor 1920’s sound quality replete with pops and scratches, but after about 30 seconds the song turns into a well recorded up-tempo modern blues rock number with Bryant’s excellent wah-wah solo taking front stage. “Where the River Ends” is a slow number that reminds me somewhat of Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight” and includes overdubbed strings. This is generally not my brand of whiskey, but I feel that the song is redeemed by Bryant’s emotional vocals. “Living with the Blues” has a solo electric guitar intro, unaccompanied by the rhythm section. This soon turns into a traditional hard blues song that at first is reminiscent of Muddy Water’s “Mannish Boy” but then becomes Bryant’s own song with a driving guitar solo. The CD concludes with “Danny’s Blues” which is nine minutes of emotional, slow, intense blues. It contains the longest guitar solo on the CD and the solo is one of the best I have heard in several months. It is the pure definition of the word burning as it applies to guitar. It is a performance like this that places Bryant in the pantheon of today’s best young guitarists. I am convinced that Danny Bryant’s next CD needs to be a live set. A list of his 2004 forthcoming gigs reveals about 80 shows, all in England, so I know that a live recording is the closest I will get to hearing him in concert. I understand that it is not unusual for Walter Trout and Danny Bryant to share the stage and jam. I’m not convinced that I could take that much guitar excellence all at once, but I would kill for the chance to find out for sure.

Danny Bryant's Red Eye Band - Watching You! (2002)

There seems to be a crop of young blues players about at the moment, on both sides of the Atlantic. This first studio release by Danny Bryant's Redeye Band should, on talent alone if not on marketing hype, put him at the top of the tree. I have been listening to blues since before this guy was born and this is the first album in a long while which has made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
