Johnny Winter - Live In NYC '97 (1998)

Johnny Winter assembled Live in NYC '97 with assistance of his fan club, drawing all of the recordings from an April 1997 performance at the Bottom Line. Produced by Winter's longtime colleague Dick Shurman, the record doesn't follow the predictable pattern of a live album — instead of hits, it offers fan favorites and covers, which makes for a much more interesting listen. Throughout the album, Winter simply rips, tearing through all five songs with blistering energy. This is the live album hardcore fans have been wanting for years, and it doesn't fail to deliver on its promise.

Johnny Winter - Blues In A Box (1998)

Only Johnny Winter completists need apply for the budget-priced three-disc Blues in a Box set, which assembles rare studio tracks from the periods spanning 1959-1969 and 1984-1985, as well as a wealth of unreleased live material. Nothing here ranks with Winter's best work — while he's deserving of a career-overview box set, this half-baked compilation certainly is not it.

Johnny Winter - Anthology (1998)

10 all out rockers are present in this collection of Winter's best covers. From "Johnny B. Goode" to "Jumpin' Jack Flash" Winter shows no fear when covering some of rock's greatest tunes. His searing guitar and howling vocals are up to the test. The main knock against this set is its brevity. At a little over 35 minutes you know this is an early CD, but until a comprehensive box set does this artist justice it will have to do.

Johnny Winter - White Hot Blues (1997)

Slowly over the years, perhaps through sheer survival if nothing else, Johnny Winter finally forged a reputation as a real bluesman rather than a flashy guitar player with a built-in genetic gimmick to sell himself with. That his blues has always been rock & roll and his rock & roll has always been blues is no better highlighted than on this 16-track collection. The raw rock of "Highway 61 Revisited" and the live version of "Johnny B. Goode" sit just fine next to the burner "Be Careful with a Fool," perhaps Winter's finest slow blues performance. The performances span his tenure with Columbia from 1969 to 1980, with the other highlights including "Too Much Seconal," "New York, New York," "Leland Mississippi Blues," and "The Crawl." This may just very well be some of the best blues-rock guitar your money can buy.

Johnny Winter - Live At The Texas Opry House (1997)

The "Live at the Texas Opry House (Jan. 9, 1978, Houston)" is also available as "A History of the Blues" which is another "legal but non official" release . This record is edited by Thunderbolt Records - TKO Magnum Music Limited under the reference CDTB 185 . The tracklisting of this record is different and complementary from the one of the "History of the Blues" bootleg, but this is apparently the same show even if the concert dates mentioned on both records are different (informations on the backcover are also full of mistakes). Also some songs fade in and out like "Hideaway" which has about 1 mn missing in the beginning and which lasts after less than 2 mn! But anyway this is an interesting record.

Johnny Winter - Blues To The Bone (1995)

This previously unissued 1967 session teams up Winter with local Dallas bluesman Calvin "Loudmouth" Johnson on 13 loose blues jams. Johnson's timing is erratic as all get out and Winter fills in wherever possible while the band fumbles through the changes, including the most obvious ones, mucking up even the instrumental passages. Despite the promise implied by the package, it's easy to see why this session stayed unissued all this time, as it's a disjointed mess that's very hard to listen to. If you're a blues or Johnny Winter fan, pass this one right by.

Johnny Winter - A Rock N' Roll Collection (1994)

A two-CD survey of Winter's recordings for Columbia between 1969 and 1979, the era of his greatest commercial success. This collects many of his most popular tracks, though it doesn't do much to argue a case for artistic diversity. Includes two otherwise unavailable songs: an alternate take of "30 Days," and a previously unreleased 1973 cover of Robert Johnson's "Come on in My Kitchen."

Johnny Winter - Walking By Myself (1992)

This is A good Representation of what Winter is all about . Blues and Blues rock. Moter Eath is an awsome Slow blues , where he plays about every lick that can be played on a guitar . One of the things about this album you'll knowtice is the songs are played Faster than Studio recordings . The Drummer is really on fire here. The sound quallity is not great but it is full sounding ,where as every thing can be heard loud and clear .The album is way better than Johnny Winter And... Playing and sound wise ,in my opinion. You don't get Hide Away or some of the other stuff he used to cover in this time period , i think thats on Lone Star Shoot out though . Johnny's Band could cover a Classic song and make it into a long jam that is why it's good to investigate other live recordings offical and unofficial . This recording sounds like a high quallity bootleg by todays standards .

Johnny Winter - Scorchin' Blues (1992)

Scorchin' Blues marries tracks from Johnny Winter's early Columbia albums — including the classic National steel-driven "Dallas" from his 1969 debut — with material from his return-to-roots Blue Sky period in the late '70s. The aggressive playing and raunchy vocals will appeal to both blues and rock fans, and Ben Sandmel crams an authoritative biography into seven pages, complete with interesting Winter quotes. The one downside: a miserly ten tracks spread over only 45 minutes of playing time.

Johnny Winter - Hey, Where's Your Brother (1992)

On the classic 1972 live album Roadwork, Edgar Winter immortalized the words, when introducing brother Johnny: "Everybody asks me...where's your brother?" It's a question that fans have besieged both Winters with for over two decades, and now Johnny gets a chance to return the tribute with his latest. Edgar does in fact guest on the sessions, blowing sax and tinkling keys on a few tracks, and dueting with big bro on a superb, seasonal rendition of "Please Come Home for Christmas."

Johnny Winter - Let Me In (1991)

Let Me In is a star-studded all-blues set from Johnny Winter, featuring cameos from Dr. John, Albert Collins, and several others. Though the set focuses on blues material, Winters can never leave his rock roots behind — the sheer volume and pile-driving energy of his performances ensures that. For most of the record, his enthusiasm is contagious, but there are a couple of bland, generic exercises that fail to work up a head of steam. But there is a lovely acoustic number called "Blue Mood," which shows Winter trying to stretch a bit by playing jazzy licks. It's a refreshing change of pace.
