Tom Principato - Raising The Roof! (2008)

Powerhouse Records announces a March 3, 2008, release date for Raising the Roof, the new album from guitarist extraordinaire Tom Principato and his band. Long-acknowledged as one of the premier guitarists in the world, Tom Principato s latest CD builds on the universal acclaim for his 2005 release, Guitar Gumbo, which won awards from the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) for Best Blues Recording and Best Blues Vocalist. With these new honors, Tom has now won a total of 22 Wammies. In addition, a song from that album, If Love Is Blind, written by Dave Kitchen, was named Song of the Year. In addition to Principato on guitar and vocals, the band features John Perry on bass and backup vocals, Joe Wells on drums and Josh Howell on congas and percussion. On Raising the Roof, the Tom Principato Band is joined by long-time DC-area favorite Tommy Lepson, who contributes his soulful Hammond B3 organ playing and vocals, as well as several other special guests. The new album showcases nine songs (including 6 originals) that demonstrate the breadth of Tom s musical influences ranging from blues, jazz and rock, to funk, reggae and New Orleans sounds. The three covers include a jazzy workout of Jimmy Smith s 8 Counts for Rita, a cooking take on J.J. Cale s Lies, and a new version of Louis Jordan s Fish Fry that brings on the funk and Jamaican flavors to this R&B classic, a long-time staple of the band s live shows.

Tom Principato & Danny Gatton - Oh No! - More Blazing Telecasters (2005)

The title of this CD is accurate, as this live date — recorded at Washington D.C.'s Adam's Rib on April 27, 1984 (but not released for the first time until 21 years later) — is full of explosive fire. The legendary Danny Gatton and Tom Principato had complementary guitar styles, open to jazz, electric blues, and country. With stimulating backup from keyboardist Mike Sucher (who often achieves the sound of an organ), bassist John Previti, and drummer Robbie Magruder, the two guitarists dig into blues, passionate pop/rock, and even "Harlem Nocturne" (a feature for Gatton), all of it having the spirit of adventurous jazz. While Principato has four vocals along the way, the emphasis is very much on the guitarists, who are at their best when they are interacting with each other. This is consistently exciting music.

Tom Principato - Guitar Gumbo (2005)

Tom Principato remains one of America's most gifted guitarists and member of top 10 of all time. "Guitar Gumbo" is scheduled to be released on Powerhouse Records in U.S., Canada and Japan, and Dixie Frog/Voodoo Records for Europe in March 2006. The songs include an array of Classic New Orleans style R & B, as well as Principato original vocals and Guitar instrumentals. There is also a great Roots Rock song "If Love Is Blind (I Hope I never See You Again)" written by Washington, D.C. Guitarist and songwriter Dave Kitchen. Musicians on the CD include Tom's working Band: John Perry on Bass, and Joe Wells on Drums, as well as Tommy Lepson on Hammond B-3 Organ and vocals. Guest Cameos include Kevin McKendree on piano from Delbert McClinton's Band, Mark Wenner from Nighthawks on harmonica, Josh Howell on Congas, and a horn section led by Chris Watling baritone sax, with Bruce Swain tenor sax, and Kevin Cordt, trumpet.

Tom Principato - House On Fire (2003)

This one sizzles with the intensity of someone who couldn't wait to get in the studio and just burn. Tone, style and a great sense of groove are what fill guitarist Tom Principato's CD "House On Fire". This is a tough guitar album with some cool Hammond B-3 underlining it's musical current. Lots of guitar edge alongside Principato's low-down vocals kicks the opener, "'Til I Get What I Came Here For", into overdrive. This is a cleanly (self-) produced record. The organ is mixed right up front with the perfect frequency of his Tele alongside of the drums and bass guitar. Principato is a cat that has chops provided by the play-every-night-of-the-week club.

Tom Principato - Not One Word (2000)

"Not One Word" from Washington DC's Tom Principato is an all instrumental disc, 9 of the 10 songs having been composed by Tom. The lone cover is a version of War's "Slippin' Into Darkness." This CD is the usual ecclectic mix, covering what is even for Principato, a wide and varied range of styles. The set ranges from the Eastern-influenced, to Latin-rock, Hendrix influenced rock tunes, neo-classical pieces, funk, and jazz balladry. There are also the patented Principato atmospheric ballads, too. Guests include Gali Sanchez (percussion), Robbie Magruder (Mary Chapin Carpenter/Roy Buchanan), Wade Matthews (Nils Lofgren), Peter Bonta (Mary Chapin Carpenter) along with Tom's current Band members. A must for fans of guitar and all styles of music!

Tom Principato - Really Blue (1998)

Principato's seventh album continues the tradition of strong guitar work coupled with vocals that are less than scintillating but never offensive, wedded to material that's more of a showcase for his playing than it is actual songs. He gives his blues-shuffle-in-E chops a workout on Johnny Jones' "Sweet Little Woman" (a cleaned-up version of the "dozens"), and his blues-rock licks get trotted out on a stiff version of Robert Johnson's "Walkin' Blues" and the T-Birds-like "Standing at the Crossroads Again." On the plus side, the minor-key slow blues workout "Really Blue," the jazzy "In Orbit" and his tribute to Danny Gatton ("One For Danny") all have their moments, and "In Another Dream" shows real originality. While Principato's penchant for ending a phrase with a trademarked triplet can get annoying in a hurry, fans of hot, well-executed guitar who aren't fussy about familiar contexts will enjoy this album.

"Blues Over The Years" is a re-mastered compilation CD of selected and popular cuts from Tom's first four albums: "Smokin'!" (1986), "I Know What You're Thinkin'..." Dixie Frog/Voodoo Records has also licensed several other Tom Principato CD's for release to the European market. The compilation proved to be so popular that Powerhouse Records released the CD to American audiences in 1999. Songs include the Steve Earle classic "My Baby Worships Me" which features a cameo vocal duet (and a blistering harmonica solo) between Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Tom. There's also a cover of B.B. King's "Never Make Your Move Too Soon" which recieved a lot of Blues radio airplay when it was first released , as well as Tom's tribute to B.B. King "Blue Mood".There's some patented Principato roots-rockers too, such as "Call The Law" and "Try To Reach You"---all delivered with typical exhuberance and flair. For guitar fans there's the lonely and passionate "Blue Lights", "Goodbye For Now", Tom's tone poem dedicated to his late father, and his scorching rendition of Sonny Landreth's "Congo Square" (recorded before the Neville Bros. and John Mayall).

Tom Principato - In The Clouds (1995)

High energy blues rock with blistering guitar. "In The Clouds" contains large helpings of Principato's patented rocking blues numbers, but there is much more, just as there is to the guitarists talents. More than half the selections are instrumental, and all are more than a little impressive...New fans may well be amazed at the depth and diversity of Principato's guitar mastery." Tom Principato - Hot Stuff! (1991)

Tom Principato, longtime linchpin of East Coast favorites Powerhouse, has slowly but surely acquired a nationwide reputation for his well-ordered, exigent blues guitar playing. This set finds the Falls Church, Virginia, resident following an intelligent commercial course, applying himself to attractive covers (from Mink DeVille, Steve Earle, and more) that usually synthesize blues, rock, and soul. "Blue Lights," an original, packs all the emotional ambiguity of the most stirring guitar blues. And his singing is quite good.

“Smokin’!” is Tom Principato’s first solo release. It features his classic early rhythm section of Steve Wolf on bass and Clark Matthews on drums, with Tommy Lepson on Hammond B-3 organ and a special guest appearance by Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds on “My Baby Worships Me.”

Tom Principato & Danny Gatton - Blazing Telecaster (1984)

"Blazing" is just the right word for this live set with blues guitar hotshot Tom Principato, who played on and off with Gatton through 1984. This is the resulting snapshot that Principato reissued several years later on his own Powerhouse label (and remains available by mail-order there, regardless of its ongoing demand as an Internet auction item). Principato's blues-oriented style — which also draws on elements of jazz, jump blues, and swing — pushed Gatton beyond the peaks he'd achieved with his Redneck Jazz Explosion, and the '50s- and '60s-style explorations of Unfinished Business. This guitar summit meeting, then, inspired some unlikely choices — such as a countrified take on Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right." Other highlights include "Honey Hush (Talkin' Woman)," which features some sizzling exchanges between both guitarists, and a Latin-oriented swing into Les Baxter's "Quiet Village," where everyone pulls off inspired soloing (except drummer Robbie Magruder). There's a bright reading of the jazz standard "Cherokee," which provides an appropriate contrast to the mellow fusion of Principato's "If You Only Knew" and "Been 'N' Gone." Guitar enthusiasts will appreciate Principato's notation of who's soloing when, as well as the photos of its featured players hamming for the camera (note the visual reference to one of Gatton's favorite concert tricks: using a beer bottle for a slide). All the players are in outstanding form, and this is definitely among the most absorbing of all Gatton's one-off projects.
